This is a “new” technology that combines augmented reality headsets with real time 3d scanners to allow a sort of 3d video conference.
Augmented reality is no news, neither are 3d scanners. Combining them in real time sounds like a good idea, I’d like to see a portable version of the room-sized rig though.
The developers claim that this will “fundamentally change the way people communicate”. I’m not so sure. Looks more like a glorified video conference set. We had free 2d video conferences for over 10 years and it is not nearly as mainstream as Twitter or Whatsapp messages. Sorry.
